About Artist

Ankon Mitra is an architect and internationally acclaimed artist whose work operates at the intersection of architecture, mathematics, science, and art. His practice has been exhibited across India, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan. He has also showcased his work at the Shanghai International Paper Art Biennale and at Arte Laguna, Venice.

Mitra is a member of the British Origami Society, Origami USA, the Sculpture Network (Europe), and the Paper Artists’ Collective Worldwide. He is the recipient of the All-India Gold Medal for Sculpture awarded by the Prafulla Dahanukar Foundation (2018) and the Lexus Design Award for Craft Design (2020). A TEDx speaker and an advocate for cross-disciplinary thinking, Mitra is known for forging meaningful connections between art, science, and design.

Central to his practice is “Oritecture”, a term he coined to describe the synthesis of origami and architecture. Through acts of folding, Mitra articulates a vision of a universe in a constant state of formation and dissolution guided by his belief in two enduring philosophical principles: “Geometry aims at the eternal” (Plato) and “The universe is mathematics” (Max Tegmark).

Trained as an architect, Mitra approaches origami not as a craft but as a cutting-edge structural and conceptual tool, engaging with contemporary research in robotics, aerospace engineering, biotechnology, and advanced mathematics. His works reveal folding as both method and metaphor expressing order, complexity, and emergence through precision and restraint.

In works such as his origami bird forms, created through the folding of white and chromatic paper, Mitra evokes themes of hope, aspiration, and freedom, offering viewers a poetic sense of flight beyond the constraints of form and gravity.
